Impressionism formed in France in the 1860s and 1870s around painters who left the studio to work outdoors and record light as it actually fell. Broken, visible brushwork, bright unmixed colour and ordinary modern subjects replaced the smooth finish and historical themes the official Salon expected. The name came from a hostile review of Claude Monet's Impression, Sunrise in 1874. Alongside Monet, the circle included Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and their approach to light and colour shaped nearly everything that followed in European painting.
