Post-Impressionism is a retrospective label, coined by the critic Roger Fry in 1910, for the artists who started from Impressionism in the 1880s and then pushed past it in different directions. Paul Cezanne looked for underlying structure, Georges Seurat for optical system, Vincent van Gogh for expressive colour and mark, Paul Gauguin for symbol and flat decorative pattern. They share no manifesto and no group exhibition, only a common starting point and a common refusal to stop at recording light. Their work opened directly onto twentieth-century painting.
