ARTISTJohn James Audubon (1785-1851) was born in Saint-Domingue, raised in France, and largely taught himself to paint. The Birds of America, issued to subscribers between 1827 and 1838, contains 435 hand-coloured plates and shows every bird at life size, which is why the pages are the size of a door. His method was uncompromising and not sentimental: he shot his specimens fresh, then pinned them to a board with wire armatures so he could pose them in flight or mid-strike while the colour was still true. No American publisher would take the project, so he sailed to Britain and found his engravers and his subscribers there.
