Mary Vaux Walcott
ARTISTMary Vaux Walcott (1860-1940) was a Philadelphia Quaker who taught herself watercolour and spent forty summers in the Canadian Rockies, where she also measured glaciers and climbed peaks few women of her generation attempted. She painted wildflowers in the field, working quickly to catch a bloom before it faded, and built the most complete visual record of North American flora of her time. In 1925 the Smithsonian published her North American Wild Flowers in five volumes with four hundred plates, an undertaking that earned her the nickname the Audubon of botany. She married Charles Doolittle Walcott, Secretary of the Smithsonian, in 1914 and continued fieldwork into her seventies. This archive holds high-resolution scans of her botanical watercolours, free to preview and available as originals for printing.
