Théodore Géricault
ARTISTTheodore Gericault (1791-1824) compressed an entire career into about a dozen years. The Raft of the Medusa, exhibited in 1819, took a government shipwreck scandal and painted it at the scale reserved for history and myth; he interviewed survivors, built a model of the raft and studied corpses to get it right. He was obsessed with horses and died because of them, after a series of riding falls. Near the end he painted a small group of portraits of patients in a Paris asylum, studies of individual people rather than symptoms, which have no real precedent. This archive holds high-resolution scans of his work, free to preview and available as originals for printing.
