Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) did not begin painting until he was twenty-seven and was dead at thirty-seven, and in that decade he made roughly two thousand one hundred works. The early Dutch pictures are dark and heavy with peasant labour. Paris gave him colour, Arles gave him the sunflowers, the yellow house and the light he had gone south to find, and the asylum at Saint-Remy gave him the cypresses and the Starry Night. He was supported throughout by his brother Theo, to whom he wrote hundreds of letters that remain the most articulate account any painter has left of his own work. He sold almost nothing while alive. This archive holds high-resolution scans of his work, free to preview and available as originals for printing.
