About this artwork
Bust of an Older Man is a black crayon, on off-white laid paper, edge mounted on cream wove paper by Jacques Louis David (1748–1825), dated c. 1810. The artist is catalogued as French. The original is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, and the file offered here measures 1890 × 2438 px (1.6 MB). You will find it among Drawings and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 208 works by Jacques Louis David, a French artist.
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
