Figurative Art
CURATED COLLECTIONThe human figure is the constant subject here, gathered from religious commissions, mythological scenes, portraiture and genre painting across several centuries of Western art. Academic training centred on the study of the body, and figurative painting carried the weight of narrative, allegory and social observation long before abstraction offered an alternative. Works range from Renaissance altarpiece figures to nineteenth century academic salon painting, drawing on classical proportion and posed studio models. Drawings, prints and finished paintings sit side by side, showing how artists solved the recurring problem of depicting bodies in space, gesture and drapery convincingly.
