Rococo
CURATED COLLECTIONPastel colour, ornamental curves and scenes of aristocratic leisure define the early to mid eighteenth century French style gathered in this collection. Fetes galantes, playful mythological subjects and intimate domestic scenes replaced the grandeur of Baroque state painting, reflecting the tastes of a court and aristocracy increasingly interested in pleasure and informality. Antoine Watteau's park gatherings, Francois Boucher's decorative mythologies and Jean-Honore Fragonard's lightly erotic garden scenes are characteristic of the style at its height. The movement was relatively short-lived, giving way by the century's end to the graver seriousness of Neoclassicism.
