About this artwork
Death of the Virgin is a painting, tempera and oil with gold on panel by Master of Heiligenkreuz (1301–1430), dated c. 1400. The artist is catalogued as Austrian. This reproduction is based on the copy in the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the file offered here measures 2747 × 3400 px (2.1 MB). Catalogued under Religion, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 3 works by Master of Heiligenkreuz, an Austrian artist.
The Master of Heiligenkreuz was an Austrian painter active at the beginning of the 15th century; a tentative lifespan of 1395 to 1430 has been put forth but this appears highly conjectural. His name is taken from a diptych that once belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, located in southeastern Austria near the present-day border with Hungary.
