About this artwork
Ghent, from Facsimiles of Sketches made in Flanders and Germany is a lithograph in black on grayish-ivory chine, laid down on ivory wove paper by Samuel Prout (1783–1852), dated 1833. The artist is catalogued as English. This reproduction is based on the copy in the Art Institute of Chicago, and the file offered here measures 2115 × 3000 px (2.5 MB). Catalogued under Prints and Romanticism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 207 works by Samuel Prout, a British artist.
Samuel Prout was a British watercolourist, and one of the masters of watercolour architectural painting, who largely invented the genre of the grand street scene in British watercolour painting, mostly with picturesque scenes from continental cities. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria.
