About this artwork
James Lockhart is a print, mezzotint on laid paper by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792), dated c. 1760. The artist is catalogued as English. The original is held by the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 2920 × 4096 px (3.3 MB). You will find it among Prints and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 351 works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, a British artist.
Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter who specialised in portraits. The art critic John Russell called him one of the major European painters of the 18th century, while Lucy Peltz says he was "the leading portrait artist of the 18th-century and arguably one of the greatest artists in the history of art." He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting, which depended on idealisation of the imperfect.
