About this artwork
Knocking the snow from a pair of clogs is a hand-colored woodblock print; hosoban, urushi-e by Torii Kiyomasu II (1706–1763), dated c. 1730s. The artist is catalogued as Japanese. The source scan comes from the Art Institute of Chicago, and the file offered here measures 1460 × 3000 px (1.5 MB). It is filed under Prints and Japanese (culture or style), in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 65 works by Torii Kiyomasu II, a Japanese artist.
Torii Kiyomasu II was a Japanese ukiyo-e painter and woodblock printmaker of the Torii school, a specialist, like the rest of the Torii artists, in billboards and other images for the promotion of the kabuki theatres. Scholars are unsure as to Kiyomasu II's relation to the original Kiyomasu who came a few decades earlier; they may have been close relations, or master and student, or they may have been the same man.
