About this artwork
Mounted Officer from the Back is a drawing and watercolor, black chalk on ivory laid paper by Jacques Louis David (1748–1825), dated c. 1810. The artist is catalogued as French. This reproduction is based on the copy in the Art Institute of Chicago, and the file offered here measures 2265 × 3000 px (1.4 MB). Catalogued under Drawings and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 208 works by Jacques Louis David, a French artist.
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
