About this artwork
New Moon or Solar Eclipse above the Riesengebirge Mountains is a drawing, pen and gray ink with watercolor over graphite on wove paper by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), dated 1810 or 1828/1835. The artist is catalogued as German. This reproduction is based on the copy in the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 4096 × 2946 px (2.9 MB). Catalogued under Landscape and Romanticism, in landscape format. Archive Lane holds 308 works by Caspar David Friedrich, a German artist.
Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation, whose often symbolic, and anti-classical work, conveys a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. Friedrich's paintings often set contemplative human figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins.
