About this artwork
Oliver Goldsmith is a print, mezzotint by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792), dated 1770. The artist is catalogued as English. This reproduction is based on the copy in the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 2990 × 4096 px (2.6 MB). Catalogued under Drawings and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 353 works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, a British artist.
Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter who specialised in portraits. The art critic John Russell called him one of the major European painters of the 18th century, while Lucy Peltz says he was "the leading portrait artist of the 18th-century and arguably one of the greatest artists in the history of art." He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting, which depended on idealisation of the imperfect.
