About this artwork
One of the Hesperides is a drawing, transfer tracing on oiled laid paper by Jacques Louis David (1748–1825), dated 1775/80. The artist is catalogued as French. The source scan comes from the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 1421 × 2874 px (0.7 MB). It is filed under Drawings and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 208 works by Jacques Louis David, a French artist.
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
