About this artwork
Sanjo Kantaro II in the Role of Urashima Taro is a painting, hanging scroll; ink and color on paper by Kaigetsudō Ando (1671–1743), dated early 1700s. The artist is catalogued as Japanese. The original is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the file offered here measures 1710 × 3400 px (0.9 MB). You will find it among Prints and Japanese (culture or style), in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 5 works by Kaigetsudō Ando, a Japanese artist.
Kaigetsudō Ando, also known as Ando Yasunori, was a Japanese painter and the founder of the Kaigetsudō school of ukiyo-e art. The characters of his name, 安度, are read "Ando" following the Sino-Japanese reading, but can also be read "Yasunobu" or "Yasunori" in native Japanese readings; this ambiguity long led to the mistaken belief that these were two distinct artists.
