Architecture as a subject covers images of buildings, ruins and structural fantasy, made for their own visual interest rather than as working plans for a builder. The eighteenth century vedute of Venice by Canaletto and the invented ruinscapes, or capricci, of Giovanni Battista Piranesi are among the best known examples, using precise perspective to record real buildings or to imagine grand structures that never existed. Architectural drawing also survives as a more technical tradition, recording elevations, sections and ornamental detail for study rather than display. A pre 1930 archive under this heading holds views, capricci and architectural studies rather than building plans.
