Mythological subjects draw on the gods, heroes and stories of classical Greece and Rome, from the loves of Jupiter to the labours of Hercules and the tale of Cupid and Psyche. Revived in the Renaissance alongside the rediscovery of classical texts, the subject let painters such as Sandro Botticelli and Titian depict elaborate figure compositions and, often, the nude, under a literary rather than a religious justification. Ovid's Metamorphoses in particular supplied centuries of painters, engravers and illustrators with subjects, and mythological scenes remained a standard part of academic training into the nineteenth century. A pre 1930 archive under this heading holds paintings, drawings and prints illustrating these classical stories.
