About this artwork
The Chastisement of Luxury is a brush and dark brown wash with traces of red chalk by Eugenio Lucas (1817–1870), dated 1870. The artist is catalogued as Spanish. This reproduction is based on the copy in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the file offered here measures 3909 × 2576 px (2.6 MB). Catalogued under Drawings, in landscape format. Archive Lane holds 2 works by Eugenio Lucas, a Spanish artist.
Eugenio Lucas Velázquez was a Spanish painter in the Romantic style, known for genre and costumbrista scenes which often featured fantastic elements. Nineteenth-century sources refer to him as Eugenio Lucas Padilla, which has caused some confusion, although it seems reasonable to assume that Velázquez was an adopted name.
