About this artwork
The Prisoner is a drawing, black chalk on cream laid paper by Jacques Louis David (1748–1825), dated c. 1816–22. The artist is catalogued as French. This reproduction is based on the copy in the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the file offered here measures 3400 × 2310 px (2.2 MB). Catalogued under Drawings and Neoclassicism, in landscape format. Archive Lane holds 208 works by Jacques Louis David, a French artist.
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
