About this artwork
The Return of the Prodigal Son is a drawing, pen and brown iron gall ink on laid paper by Guercino (1591–1666), dated c. 1640. The artist is catalogued as Italian. The original is held by the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 3275 × 3807 px (2.3 MB). You will find it among Drawings and Baroque, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 230 works by Guercino, an Italian artist.
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as (il) Guercino, was an Italian Baroque painter and draftsman from Cento in the Emilia region, who was active in Rome and Bologna. The vigorous naturalism of his early manner contrasts with the classical equilibrium of his later works.
