Children Wall Art
WALL ARTChildhood as a subject shifted considerably over the centuries covered by this archive. Earlier images often placed children within religious narrative or as miniature adults in family portraits, dressed and posed to match their parents. From the eighteenth century onward, painters increasingly treated childhood as a distinct state worth observing on its own terms, recording play, schooling and rural chores rather than formal likeness alone. Genre painters used children to suggest innocence, mischief or hardship depending on the setting. What is gathered here traces that change in how artists chose to look at the young, rather than collecting portraits of named individuals.
