High and difficult terrain entered landscape art relatively late, once travel across the Alps and later further ranges became common enough for painters to have seen it firsthand. Earlier depictions often stylised peaks as background scenery, sharp and decorative rather than observed. The Romantic period changed this decisively, treating mountains as a subject able to carry awe, danger and scale on their own, with human figures reduced to a small mark against the rock. Travel prints and topographical views later recorded specific named peaks for visitors and armchair travellers alike. This grouping follows mountain imagery from that decorative background use through to its Romantic and topographical treatments.
