Orientalism Wall Art
WALL ARTOrientalism describes a nineteenth-century European genre depicting North Africa and West Asia, fuelled by colonial expansion, growing travel and the wave of interest following the 1798 French campaign in Egypt. Painters produced harem interiors, bazaars, desert caravans and prayer scenes largely for audiences who had never visited the region, working from costume, props and a handful of sketches rather than sustained observation. Later scholarship reads these images critically, as European constructions of an imagined East rather than reliable records of the places shown. The genre nonetheless produced technically accomplished painting and remains a distinct, well-documented strand of nineteenth-century art. This grouping reflects that body of work as it survives.
