Theatre, dance, music and circus supplied painters with subjects already composed by lighting, costume and gesture before a brush touched canvas. Backstage and rehearsal scenes, a particular interest of some nineteenth-century painters, showed performers between acts rather than mid-spectacle, trading spectacle for a more candid view of the profession. Portraits of well-known performers served as a kind of publicity as well as art, circulated in print form for a public that could not always attend. Popular entertainment such as circus and cabaret brought looser, more energetic treatments than formal theatre allowed. This grouping gathers that range of performance subjects across painting and print.
