Propaganda here means images made under state or wartime direction to shape opinion rather than to record or decorate, a use of art distinct from ordinary commercial advertising. Governments commissioned posters and prints urging enlistment, thrift, morale or hostility toward an enemy, usually through simplified figures, national symbols and short slogans designed to be understood instantly. Such images were produced in large runs and displayed publicly rather than sold as art objects, which shaped their bold, poster-like style. The genre expanded sharply during periods of major conflict covered by this archive. What is gathered here is that persuasive, state-directed material rather than any wider commercial design.
