Saints Wall Art
WALL ARTSaints appear throughout Christian art carrying fixed attributes that let a period viewer identify them without a label, a key, a set of arrows, a particular animal or the instrument of an ordeal. Painters and printmakers depicted saints in devotional panels, altarpiece cycles and small prints intended for private prayer, often repeating the same figure many times across regions and centuries with only style and setting changing. Some saints carried strong local or national associations, giving certain images added significance beyond the devotional. Identification usually depends on reading these attributes together with any accompanying inscription. This grouping collects that long iconographic tradition across painting and print.
