Painters turned to their own likeness for practical reasons as much as personal ones: a mirror provided a model who needed no fee and was always available, and a finished self-portrait doubled as proof of skill for prospective patrons. The tradition runs continuously from Durer, who signed and dated his self-portraits with unusual deliberateness, through later artists who used the format to experiment with pose, costume and expression away from the demands of a paying sitter. Some painted themselves at work, brush and palette in hand, asserting their professional standing directly. Others used the mirror for more private, exploratory studies. This grouping follows that long practice of artists observing themselves.
