About this artwork
Tracings of Classical Subjects is a drawing, black chalk tracing on oiled laid paper by Jacques Louis David (1748–1825), dated 1775/80. The artist is catalogued as French. The original is held by the National Gallery of Art, and the file offered here measures 3240 × 4096 px (3.0 MB). You will find it among Drawings and Neoclassicism, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 208 works by Jacques Louis David, a French artist.
Jacques-Louis David was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. In the 1780s, his cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling, which harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
