About this artwork
Young shepherd seated in a landscape looking toward an old man in the lower right, buildings in the background and a tree and mountain at left is an engraving (stipple) by Giulio Campagnola (1482–1515), dated 1512. The artist is catalogued as Italian. This reproduction is based on the copy in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the file offered here measures 1769 × 2841 px (1.0 MB). Catalogued under Prints, in portrait format. Archive Lane holds 21 works by Giulio Campagnola, an Italian artist.
Giulio Campagnola was an Italian engraver and painter, whose few, rare, prints translated the rich Venetian Renaissance style of oil paintings of Giorgione and the early Titian into the medium of engraving; to further his exercises in gradations of tone, he also invented the stipple technique, where multitudes of tiny dots or dashes allow smooth graduations of tone in the essentially linear technique of engraving; variations on this discovery were to be of huge importance in future printmaking.
