Young John Bauer applied to the art academy in Stockholm at an early age. But at just sixteen, he was unfortunately too young to be accepted. So he first began an apprenticeship at Althin's Målarskola. A few years later, he was overjoyed when he was finally accepted to the Academy of Art. During his studies, Paul began to accept new commissions for illustrations. One day he received the commission that would change his life. The commission was to illustrate the fairy tale series Bland Tomtar och troll, which means among gnomes and trolls. These illustrations made John Bauer the most famous Swedish fairy tale illustrator.
