Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) went to Oxford intending to take orders, met William Morris there, and left with a different vocation entirely. He became the central painter of the second Pre-Raphaelite generation and Morris's lifelong collaborator, designing stained glass and tapestries for Morris and Company for nearly forty years. His subjects are Arthurian legend, classical myth and medieval romance, painted in a cool, deliberate, slightly airless world where nothing hurries. The Golden Stairs and King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid made him famous across Europe, and his influence runs straight into Art Nouveau and Symbolism. This archive holds high-resolution scans of his work, free to preview and available as originals for printing.
