Baroque
CURATED COLLECTIONDramatic contrasts of light and shadow, dynamic composition and heightened emotion characterise the seventeenth century painting gathered in this collection. The style developed partly in response to the Counter-Reformation, which wanted religious art capable of moving viewers directly rather than instructing them calmly, and it spread from Italy across Catholic Europe with considerable regional variation. Caravaggio's stark tenebrism, Peter Paul Rubens's crowded, muscular compositions and Rembrandt's more introspective handling of light all fall within this broad period. Religious and mythological subjects dominate, treated with a theatrical intensity that Renaissance painting generally avoided.
