The cityscape takes the urban environment itself as its subject: streets, squares, waterfronts and skylines, rather than a stage for figures. It grew out of the topographical view tradition, especially the vedute of eighteenth century Venice painted by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, which recorded specific, recognisable places rather than invented scenery. In the nineteenth century, painters associated with Impressionism, including Camille Pissarro, turned the modern city itself, its boulevards, bridges and railway stations, into a serious subject. A pre 1930 archive under this heading holds paintings, prints and drawings of specific towns and cities rather than generic rural scenery.
